After more than a year of battle against COVID-19, we must recognize those on the front lines—our hospital workers. Doctors, nurses, janitorial staff, technicians, administrators, and many others have invested countless hours helping the people in their communities. We’re grateful for the thousands that risk their health to save as many lives as possible.
History meeting the present
The first National Hospital Day was established in May 1921 as part of a publicity campaign. Following the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic, the public feared hospital visits. The day reinvigorated citizens’ confidence in hospitals and inspired employees.
In 1953, the day officially expanded to a week. The change occurred in tandem with Florence Nightingale’s birthday, honoring her contributions to modern nursing practices. The tradition of thanking America’s hospitals and health system employees continues to this day.
Showing our appreciation
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we must recognize the dedication of those working hard to heal the infected. While National Hospital Week falls May 9-15, 2021, it’s important to show support year-round. Healthcare workers embody this year’s theme by providing “Hope through Healing,” and we thank them for their service.
