Tips for working with an interpreter
Working with CyraCom's medical interpreters is easy! Follow these tips to work most effectively with our interpreters:
-
When the interpreter comes on the line, allow the interpreter to greet you and provide you with their Interpreter ID Number. Note this number on the patient's chart or in your progress notes.
-
Provide the interpreter with a brief explanation of the call.
-
Speak directly to your patient
-
Make eye contact with the patient
-
Speak to the patient in the first person as if you were speaking to an
English speaking patient.
-
Use short, but complete phrases.
-
Avoid slang, jargon or metaphors.
-
Allow for the interpreter to clarify any linguistic or cultural issues
-
Allow extra time as everything is said at least twice
-
Remember that everything will be repeated and kept confidential
-
Let the interpreter know when the interpretation session is finished. The interpreter disconnects from the call with a brief closing statement including providing you with his/her interpreter number.
