ASL Video Remote Interpretation

FAQs

How do I pay for ASL-VRI?

ASL-VRI through Cyracom is a pay-per-minute service; when the service connects to an interpreter on screen, the billing starts. You are not charged for any waiting times, and there are no minimum usage fees.

How do I connect to an ASL interpreter?

Connection takes place through the Internet, so your network can connect with the right equipment. CyraCom utilizes an array of Polycom equipment. Your medical center or department can either purchase or lease this equipment.

Why should I purchase equipment for this service?

Polycom equipment can be a wise investment when there is less unnecessary spending on interpreter minimum hours and travel time. Over time, our clients see a return on their investment in equipment through cost savings. Additionally, there are potential improvements to patient flow and Average Length of Stay (ALS).

How can ASL-VRI decrease patient flow or Average Length of Stay (ALS)?

When Deaf patients wait less, they can be treated faster. This can play an important role in emergency situations or extended hospital visits. Any hours waiting for an interpreter are more hours waiting, in a bed or otherwise.

Is ASL-VRI supposed to replace all live interpreters?

Not necessarily. Barring any emergencies that would dictate otherwise, it is recommended that the Deaf patient choose what form of reasonable accommodation is provided. Some Deaf people will prefer a live interpreter because of the physical presence provided. Conversely, some in the Deaf community enjoy VRI because the lack of waiting is equivalent to a hearing person’s experience. For more on this subject, see our Deaf Community Page.

How long does it take to connect to an ASL interpreter through VRI?

Less than fifteen minutes. Often, connect times are considerably less than fifteen minutes, sometimes instantly. Time of day can affect connect time; daytime hours will usually have faster connect times than evening or night times.

Where is ASL-VRI best utilized?

ASL-VRI has uses in any medical facility that serves Deaf patients. Emergency Departments favor video interpreting particularly, due to the urgent and unscheduled nature of visits.
